Jewelry Clasp Styles

Types of Jewelry Clasp Styles
Lobster Clasp
The Lobster Clasp which can also be called the Trigger Clasp, is one of the most common options used on jewelry especially with necklaces and chains. You will find that lobster clasp can be oval shaped in general but can be seen in varying shapes and sizes,
To operate a lobster clasp you simply:
-
Pull back on a tiny trigger
-
The trigger will open the clasp, which then you can attach the opposite end to the clasp side and then releases the trigger to close the clasp.
The easy of use of the lobster clasp makes it a common clasp to use on jewelry and will find it being used in different materials, weights, and sizes depending on the jewelry type.
The Lobster clasp are very strong because of the ovoid shape which means that strain is never put on the the most delicate part of the clasp where it opens.
One disadvantage to using this type of clasp it that it can be difficult to use with only one hand.

Barrel Clasp
If you look at this clasp it's name is clear. When the two sides of the jewelry are connected you will notice that the two ends form a barrel like connection.
There are generally two ways a barrel clasp can be connected. There is the screwing mechanism or a magnetic connection.
When using the screwing mechanism, two hands are required to attach the two ends of the jewelry. This obviously would be very difficult for a bracelet and therefore you will not see this on bracelet jewelry.
When looking for a clasp that it sure to hold your jewelry together, the barrel clasp with the screwing mechanism is going to be the safest bet. For the clasp to come undone it would have to literally be unscrewed for it to come off, so this is very secure when it comes to jewelry clasp. Although very secure this can be a very difficult clasp to use with people who have dexterity issues or people who have difficulty fastening and disconnecting this type of clasp.

Spring Ring Clasp
The Spring Ring Clasp operates similar to the lobster clasp. The Spring Ring Clasp open when you push backwards on a little lever that slides along a circular ring. Once the clasp is open you insert the other end of the jewelry piece into the clasp.
Release the lever and the clasp will close keeping the jewelry piece secure. Spring Ring Clasp are commonly used on necklaces, bracelets, and anklets.
Some people may find it difficult operating the clasp level due to its small size. If the clasp is attached to a good size loop can make operating the lever with ease.

Toggle Clasp
A toggle clasp is specialty design and consist of some kind of metal with usually a circle shape with a hole in the center of it. The other side of the jewelry piece will have a thick bar in the shape of a "T".
This clasp works by taking the T shaped bar putting in through the hole on the end of the jewelry piece which locks the piece into place.
Toggle clasp have generally been used in bracelets and anklets, but with their decorative and appeal you will find this kind of task on necklaces.
One thing to check when purchasing a jewelry piece is to ensure that the T Shaped metal bar is thick enough to ensure a secure fit into the clasp. If this bar is made to thin, the chances of having the clasp come undone is increased.
Toggle clasp can be made into simple designs but they do lend themselves to being quite elaborate making them a great choice for necklaces.
Although the toggle clasp can be used virtually on any piece of jewelry, you'll find these on jewelry that doesn't move around too much or has considerable weight to it to keep the toggle clasp in place.

Magnetic Clasp
The Magnetic Clasp is a simple designed clasp that uses magnets in both ends of the jewelry piece and you simple bring the two ends together and the magnets pull together locking the jewelry in place.
Although a simple design the clasp can be made into different shapes, sizes, and styles. The clasp can also be decorated with other stones and accessories.
You will find that this is probably the easiest clasp to use and can be very beneficial for people such as the elder or for people who have limited dexterity.

Hook, S, Fish hook Clasp
The hook and eye clasp has been around forever and is a simple design. On one end of the jewelry you will have a hook and on the other side of the jewelry you will have a ring. The hook will connect to the ring and fasten the jewelry piece together.
The other variation of the hook clasp is the S Hook clasp. An S Shaped hook will be placed on one end and will attach to the ring on the other side of the jewelry piece. The S Shaped hook can add more decorative look and add sophistication to the jewelry piece.
The Fish Hook design consist of a small box on one side of the jewelry and the hook on the opposite side is attached to the box where the clasp will be concealed.
The S Shaped and Fish hook designs can be decorative in ways like adding precious stones and elaborate designs to the clasp.
